HOW TO USE A NEBULIZER MACHINE
A nebulizer is a medical device that turns liquid medication into a fine mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. It is commonly used to help manage certain respiratory conditions and can be helpful for adults and children who have difficulty using an inhaler.
Important: All nebulizer users should consult their doctor before beginning treatments. Your doctor will determine whether nebulizer treatments are appropriate for you, which medication to use, and how often treatments should be performed. Always follow your prescribed treatment plan.
How to Set Up Your Nebulizer
Before beginning a treatment, make sure your nebulizer is clean and ready to use.
- Wash your hands. Use soap and water, then dry your hands with a clean towel.
- Prepare the machine. Place the compressor on a stable, flat surface.
- Add your medication. Place only the prescribed medication into the nebulizer medication cup, following your doctor's instructions.
- Assemble the equipment. Secure the medication cup and attach the mouthpiece or face mask.
- Connect the tubing. If your model uses tubing, connect it to the medication cup and compressor as directed.
- Power on the device. Plug in the nebulizer or ensure its battery is charged, depending on your model.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific nebulizer. If you are unsure how to assemble or operate your equipment, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for assistance.
How to Use a Nebulizer
Once your nebulizer is assembled, follow these general steps:
- Sit upright. Choose a comfortable chair and maintain an upright position during treatment.
- Position the mouthpiece or mask. If using a mouthpiece, place it between your teeth and seal your lips around it. If using a mask, position it securely over your nose and mouth.
- Turn on the machine. Confirm that the medication is producing a mist.
- Breathe normally. Take slow, steady breaths through your mouth. If your healthcare provider recommends it, periodically take a slow, deep breath and briefly hold it before exhaling.
- Complete the treatment. Continue until the medication cup is empty or the treatment is complete according to your device's instructions. Treatment time varies by machine and medication.
- Turn off the machine. Remove the mouthpiece or mask when finished.
- Clean the equipment. Clean and dry the medication cup, mouthpiece or mask, and other removable parts according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If you become dizzy or uncomfortable during treatment, pause and rest. Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms persist or you experience concerning side effects.
How Often Should You Use a Nebulizer?
The frequency and duration of nebulizer treatments depend on your medical condition and prescribed medication. Some people may need treatments on a regular schedule, while others may use them only when directed for certain symptoms.
Never start, stop, increase, or change your nebulizer treatments without consulting your doctor. If you have questions about your treatment schedule or medication dosage, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Benefits of Nebulizer Treatments
Nebulizers deliver prescribed medication as a mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. They may be helpful for people who have difficulty coordinating their breathing with an inhaler, including some children and adults.
Depending on the prescribed medication and the individual's condition, nebulizer treatments may help manage respiratory symptoms and support a healthcare provider's treatment plan.
Cleaning and Maintaining Your Nebulizer
Proper cleaning helps keep your nebulizer functioning correctly and reduces the risk of contamination.
- Clean the medication cup and other removable components after each use, as directed by the manufacturer.
- Allow cleaned parts to air-dry completely before storing them.
- Disinfect components as recommended in your device's instructions.
- Do not immerse the compressor or electrical components in water.
- Replace tubing, filters, masks, and other parts according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
If your nebulizer is not producing a mist, appears damaged, or is not working correctly, stop using it and consult the manufacturer, your equipment provider, or your healthcare provider as appropriate.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor?
Contact your healthcare provider if you have questions about your medication, experience bothersome side effects, or are unsure whether your nebulizer is being used correctly.
Some nebulized medications may cause side effects such as shakiness, jitteriness, or a rapid heartbeat. Discuss these symptoms with your doctor, especially if they are persistent or severe.
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience severe or worsening difficulty breathing, blue or gray lips, confusion, or other signs of a medical emergency. Do not rely on a nebulizer treatment alone when emergency care is needed.
